Chance alignment with us places NGC 891 edge-on to us, however, and telescopes reveal a ghostly ribbon of light. Larger instruments will reveal the dark band of dust that travels in the plane of the galaxy's spin - our own galaxy has such dust, and among other things, it is useful for making solid planets and creatures like you and me. NGC 891 is much more distant than M31, but is easily located in our sky just 3 degrees east of Almach, the last star in the TV antenna of Andromeda.
